Katie's Latest

Katie and Vivian

Katie came home from school the other day with a letter which she casually handed to me like it was the week's lunch menu.  Katie was nominated for recognition as an outstanding member of her school's community.  She has been volunteering in the library all year, and the school librarian wrote the following:

"Kathryn has been a great library helper.  She always comes in willing to work, even if it means shelving more books.  She has even shelved nonfiction, which most students think is impossible.  When things are quiet in the library, she will look around for other jobs to do, and will straighten shelves, dust, or generally neaten up the library without even being asked!  She is extremely conscientious about her homework as well and makes sure that her school work is finished before doing her library jobs.

"Kathryn is always very professional in her demeanor and focused on helping others.  Because she has read so much, she is very good at giving other students recommendations.  She is also an amusing young woman and we have had many interesting conversations...she certainly has made my hectic mornings much more pleasant."

Our first reaction was pride, of course.  Then we wanted to know why these behaviors seem designated for school only...
