Holey Hearts

We try, when possible, to get some one-on-one time with each of the kids. This particular Sunday, Abby said she wanted to make homemade donuts with me. She decided she wanted them to be heart-shaped, so we bought a cookie cutter, found a simple recipe, and got to work at 8am one Sunday morning. Four hours later, we had an improvised concoction that Abby named "Holey Hearts". Here's what we learned:

1. When oil is hot enough to fry something, it isn't boiling.

2. It takes a long time to lower the temperature of a pot of boiling oil.

3. There's a good reason why donuts have holes in them and aren't heart-shaped.

4. Once in a great while, it's ok to serve donuts for lunch, even if your children haven't had breakfast.
