A Truly Scary Halloween

Well, Halloween this year was scarier than usual. Katie had pneumonia and Chris's doctor confirmed that he had the H1N1 flu and bilateral pneumonia. Because Chris was quarantined inside, Abby went trick-or-treating with a friend. Katie had had 24 hours of antibiotics and insisted (against doctor's orders) that she show off her Hermione costume. I felt sorry for her, so I left a bowl of candy on our front step and took Zach and Katie to seven houses before she insisted on going home to bed. Zach and I spent the rest of the night sitting on the cold front stoop handing out candy so as not to be fanning germs onto unsuspecting ghouls.

To top things off, Zach had two very cool halloween costumes (Spiderman and Superman) to choose from that included masks and capes. (The Spiderman costume even had the padded abs.) Fifteen minutes before we left the house, however, he found out that his buddy Eldon was wearing a Batman costume, and insisted he do the same.

"But Zach," I pleaded, "You wanted this Spiderman costume and it's so cool. Don't you want to be Spiderman?"

"NO!" he screamed, "I'm gonna be Batman!"

"Zach," I said, "You don't have a Batman costume."

"YES I DO!"

"No, you don't," I said matter-of-factly.

"YES I DO!" he screamed, tears now screaming down his face.

"Look," I said with all the calmness I could muster, "You have two choices. You can be Superman or you can be Spiderman. You pick."

"I'M BEING BATMAN," he screamed and stormed upstairs.

Ding-dong. Trick or Treaters start arriving, so I go outside, administer candy, run Abby down the street to her friend's house, and come back home to Zach coming down the stairs in his Batman t-shirt from Uncle Jay and a magician's cape from the dress-up box. "See," he says confidently, "I'm Batman." And so he was.
